Minimum Age for Acquiring Types of Licences
Ensure you meet the minimum age requirement for the license you wish to apply for. Below is a table listing the minimum age for each specific license type.

Applying for a Jersey Provisional Driving Licence
Once you have confirmed that you meet the age requirement, you can begin the process by applying for a Jersey provisional driving license to start learning to drive.
Application Fee
- £30, payable online via debit or credit card.
Requirements
- A recent photograph (taken within the last 6 months).
- You may need to fill in a medical report if you have certain medical conditions, for more information on this please click here.
- You must be a Jersey resident to be eligible, which requires you to have lived in Jersey continuously for the past 12 months.
Once Issued
- Your provisional licence will be valid for 6 months and is only valid within Jersey.
- You must carry it with you at all times when driving.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
Once you have a provisional driving licence, you can take the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), which is a basic course on motorcycling.
- You must complete your CBT before you can ride a moped or motorcycle on Jersey roads.
- You should pass your theory test before doing your CBT course. If you don’t, you will need to pass 10 theory questions during your CBT. If you fail these questions you will not be able to continue the course and you will have to pay again.
- If you received a full moped licence before the CBT was introduced, you’ll need to complete the course before you can take a practical driving test for a light motorcycle category A1.
- The course is delivered by the Jersey School of Motorcycling who are the only approved provider of the CBT in Jersey, only CBT certificates they issue will be accepted. To learn more, visit their site here.

Riding a Moped or Light Motorcycle as a Learner
Once you have a provisional driving licence and have passed your CBT, you can ride a moped or light motorcycle on the road as a learner.
Requirements
- You must have valid insurance for any vehicle you ride.
- You must have completed the CBT course.
- You must have a Learner ‘L’ plate integrated into the vehicle’s number plate.

- You must not carry any passengers whilst your a learner.
- You should carry your CBT and PTI certificate.
Riding a Heavy Motorcycle as a Learner
Once you have a provisional driving licence, have passed your CBT and have had a full light motorcycle licence for 12 months you may apply for a provisional heavy motorcycle licence.
You won’t need to retake the theory test unless you’ve been disqualified or received your A1 licence before the need to pass a theory test was introduced.
Requirements
- You must have valid insurance for any vehicle you ride.
- You must have completed the CBT course.
- You must have a Learner ‘L’ plate integrated into the vehicle’s number plate.
- You must not carry any passengers whilst your a learner.
- You should carry your CBT and PTI certificate.
Obtaining a Full Moped and Light Motorcycle Licence
After obtaining your moped/ light motorcycle provisional licence, you have 6 months to complete your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), pass your theory test, and attempt your practical test to progress to a full licence. Failure to do so within this timeframe may result in the refusal of a second provisional licence unless you provide a valid reason.
Moped and Motorcycle Theory Test
Before you take your practical test you must first take your theory test.
The theory test is an exam to test your knowledge of the Highway Code, road safety and vehicle rules. It has 2 parts, multiple-choice questions and hazard perception videos. For more information on this please visit here.

- £39.50 for moped, light motorcycles and heavy motorcycles

On the Day of the Theory Test
- The test will take place at Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS).
- Arrive 15 minutes early. Late arrivals won’t be allowed to take the test and will need to re-book and pay again.
- Bring a valid provisional licence for the category you’re testing for.
- If you don’t have the provisional licence with you, DVS may check their records, but a photo ID will be required.
After the Theory Test
- If you pass, you’ll receive a certificate, valid for life unless you’re disqualified and required to retake the test after a ban.
- If you fail, you’ll need to retake the test and pay again. You’ll also receive a breakdown of your results to help you prepare.

Obtaining a Full Heavy Motorcycles Licence
After obtaining your heavy motorcycle provisional licence, you can book your practical test straight away, as you would have already completed the theory test for your moped or light motorcycle licence.
Moped and Motorcycle Practical Test
Once you have passed your driving theory test and are experienced enough in your driving ability you can take your practical test.
All Moped and Motorcycle Practical Tests Include
- An eyesight check
- Safety questions
- About 40 minutes of riding on a moped and motorcycle
Moped and Light Motorcycles Practical Tests Include
- Ride defensively and anticipate the actions of other road users
- Use rear observation when appropriate
- Assume the correct road position when riding and at junctions
Heavy Motorcycle Practical Tests Include
The practical test for heavy motorcycles has 2 parts on and off the road.
On Road:
- Ride defensively and anticipate the actions of other road user
- Use rear observation when appropriate
- Assume the correct road position when riding and at junctions
Off Road:
- 3 figures-of-eight around cones
- Slalom around cones
- U-turn in an enclosed area
- Controlled stop in a specific area
- Emergency stop
- Ride alongside the examiner at a varying walking pace
Practical Test Fee
- £58.50 for cars and heavy motorcycles
- £110 for large goods or passenger vehicles

One the Day of Your Practical Test
- Your test will start and finish at Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS).
- Arrive 15 minutes early; late arrivals must re-book and pay again.
- Bring a suitable vehicle.
- Show your theory certificate, provisional licence, CBT certificate and PTI certificate (for moped and light motorcycles)
- Have glasses or contact lenses if needed.
- Sign a declaration confirming insurance for the vehicle.
After Your Practical Test
- You can drive for 7 days without supervision after passing. Keep your pass certificate with you when driving.
- Within 7 days, apply for your full driving licence to continue riding. You have up to 5 years to apply without retaking the test.
- A full licence costs £70 and is valid for 10 years.
- Licences are issued by Parishes. Find your parish on Comité des Connétables.
- Ensure you have the proper insurance to drive solo.
- If you fail, you can retake the test after 7 days. During this time, you can still ride as normal but must display a learner ‘L’ plate and must not take passengers.

- £50.50 for mopeds or light motorcycles
- £58.50 for heavy motorcycles
